🎭 LA Shows and Events: Week of June 10, 2024

Thank you for subscribing to Ensemble LA, where we celebrate and share LA’s exciting and scrappy theatre scene.

Please share with anyone creative in LA, anyone who is in a show, and anyone who wants to see shows! ✨

It’s a busy LA theatre week because The Hollywood Fringe gets going in a few days! I’ve chosen a few to highlight in my list below, but as always, there are endless delights to choose from.

Last week we went to see Nye, one of the shows I was particularly sad to miss while I couldn’t go back to the UK (I’m waiting for my green card 🙃). Thank goodness for National Theatre Live, this was their 100th recorded show!

As a Welsh person, seeing Welsh history on stage was a strange feeling; Welsh stories in particular don’t tend to make it to the West End, and even many British people don’t know the NHS was started by a Welsh person. I was ready to feel sentimental, but I was also intrigued to see how they would stage what is (by all accounts) a pretty boring political story. And if it would translate to an American audience at all. Happily, it did! (Sample party: my American wife!)

The production was wonderful. Staging aside, seeing Michael Sheen run around in his pajamas for two and a half hours was a delight—to say nothing of the charisma and tenderness of his performance. My wife and I both really admired the use of physical theatre to heighten key moments: the ensemble moved as one, effortlessly blending through scene and character, creating the House of Commons, the shelves of a library, and a fully staffed hospital—to name a few specific examples. The whole production had a surreal tone that allowed for a very heightened exploration of emotion and character: it was unapologetically theatrical. On the other hand, they also knew when to keep things simple, letting the acting convey the weight of what was happening. It also had some of the best use of projections I’ve seen in a show.

It’s showing again at the end of July if anyone wants to catch it.

With that said, on to this week's clowns, performers, and all-out entertainers. Here are some shows you shouldn’t miss.
